John Fremstad
John Fremstad is a 1959 graduate of Astoria High School. He continued his education at Yale University, earning his Bachelor’s Degree in 1964, and at the University of Wisconsin, earning his Master’s Degree and PhD in 1968 and 1970, respectively.
Beginning in the fall of 1969, John took a position as professor in the Political Sciences Dept at the University of South Dakota in Vermillion, SD.
While there, he taught several classes in various fields and topics of the social sciences. He also participated in an exchange program with the University of Oldenburg in Germany in 1984-85 and again in 1991-92. Additionally, while the temporary Chair of the Modern Languages Dept at the U of SD in 1998-2001, he initiated a semester abroad program with the Friedrich Schiller University in Jena, Germany and spent several months as a visiting professor in Jena.
A full-time resident of Astoria since 2015, John enjoys his work with Astoria High School Scholarships, Inc. encouraging and educating students on successfully applying to post-secondary educational institutions or vocational schools to continue their growth and progression and reaching their capabilities.
